Wetherspoon Seek Extended Opening Hours - But Face Opposition From Burgess Hill Town Council
11th January 2025 | By Peter Chapman
J.D Wetherspoon have applied to extend the opening hours of their Burgess Hill Branch - The Six Gold Martlets - by an extra hour, Sunday through to Thursday, but face opposition from Burgess Hill Town Council who have objected to the proposed opening and closing times.
The Proposed New Hours
The application for a variation on the existing licence seeks to have the venue close at 12:30am Sunday - Thursday, an hour later than the current closing time of 11:30pm
Fans of drinking late in 'Spoons on Friday and Saturday could get half an hours extra boozing in with the new proposed closing times on those nights being 1:30am instead of 1am.
In addition, Wetherspoon seek to open half an hour earlier for breakfast on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with doors opening at 7am instead of 7:30am.
The Town Council Objects
Burgess Hill Town Council have objected to the licesning variation on the following reasons:
“The Council would not support this change in the licence due to the increased proximity of residential units in the town centre. Later night venues are now a disturbance to the sleep patterns of families.
We would ask that the District refuse the extension of licencing hours which is already through to 1am at the weekend and on a weeknight 11.30 is late enough.”
At the Town Council's Planning Meeting last Monday ( 6th January) acting chairman Cllr Janice Henwood appealed for a council representative to attend the Licencing Panel Hearing in person - to be held at MSDC later this month - to further contest the application.
