Burgess Hill Branch Of Wilko To Permanently Close On Thursday 5th October
23rd September 2023 | By Peter Chapman
The closing date for the Wilko store at the Market Place Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill has been announced for Thursday 5th October.
The company fell into administration last month with attempts to find a buyer to keep any of the stores running failing.
Homeware retail chain 'The Range' has purchased the Wiko brand and website in a £5 million deal which will also see the retailer stock Wilko branded products in their stores.
“In the absence of viable offers for the whole business, very sadly store closures and redundancies of team members from those stores are now necessary, in addition to the already announced redundancies at the support centre and distribution centres,” said joint administrator Edward Williams.
The Wilko store in Burgess Hill first opened in 1997 when it was known as 'Wilkinson' and was a massive addition to the town centre and drew visitors from across Mid Sussex and Brighton.
The impending departure will leave
another large gap to fill for LaSalle Investment Management in a centre which already has unoccupied units following the withdrawals of Argos and Hair Essentials.
With the neighbouring Martlets Shopping Centre redevelopment also still floundering, it's going to be
a very tough period for the businesses in the town centre and will require a lot of effort from the local councils to come up with initiatives to keep shoppers coming into town.
Spread the word! Wilko is closing for good on Thursday 5th October
