Burgess Hill's Legendary Gas Holder Set For Demolition
15th April 2013
By Peter Chapman
Sad times for fans of the Gas Holder in Leylands Road. The owners have put in an application to Mid Sussex District Council for it to be demolished.
It was supposed to be removed in 2007 but thankfully it never happened. This time however it seems as though one of Burgess Hill's finest pieces of architecture will not be gracing the skyline for much longer.
Here's a photo of the Gas Holder in all its glory...
The Gas Holder has been redundant for many years but is still costing Southern Gas Networks yearly maintenance fees due to needing regular inspection.
The chosen method of demolition will be via long-arm shears and sadly not by using explosives
According to documents, there could be as many as 56 new homes built on the site. Maybe the section 106 money from such a development can pay for more leisure equipment in Haywards Heath?
It's always good to share, so let your friends know that a piece of Burgess Hill history is about to disappear FOREVER!
