Burgess Hill Town Stun Lewes To Win The Sussex Derby On New Year's Day
1st January 2019 | By Peter Chapman
Burgess Hill Town Football Club started off 2019 with a bang by defeating high-flying Lewes FC 3-0 at the Dripping Pan on New Year's Day as they climbed closer to escaping the relegation zone.
Simon Wormull's men currently sit in 20th place in the Bostik League Premier Division and were up against Darren Freeman's Rooks who had been in 2nd place until they didn't have a game on the Saturday which saw them drop to 4th in the league - albeit a temporary 4th place they'd hoped!
The Hillians were coming into the fixture off the back of two league wins in a row, 3-0 against Carshalton Athletic and 2-1 over Worthing FC on Boxing day.
Games between Sussex teams are usually competitive, open affairs and this proved to be the case today. Lewes had the better of the first half but failed to get on the scoresheet and the visitors made them pay in the second half with three goals in 21 minutes. The opener came through an Olumide Oluwatimilehin own goal in the 51st minute as he deflected in Ben Pope's long throw.
The lead was doubled 8 minutes later as Pope was set free and brilliantly found the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
The icing was well and truly put on the cake in the 72nd minute as 'Super' Pat Harding scored with a dipping, swerving shot from 25 yards out to give Lewis Carey absolutely no chance in the Lewes goal as the Hillians claimed a vital three points which leaves them in the relegation zone only on goal difference behind AFC Hornchurch who currently sit in 19th position.
Burgess Hill are next in action on Saturday 5th
January at home to Folkestone Invicta.
Spread the word! Burgess Hill Town Football Club have started the new year with a huge win over Lewes FC.
